Unlike traditional fabric R&D centers, the Cloth Library has always explored fabrics from a contemporary perspective, not only reinventing the function and texture of fabrics with contemporary technology, but also emphasizing the role of fabrics in the entire design industry, constantly exploring the boundaries of fabrics and more. More possibilities. With such an initial intention, the Cloth Library has repeatedly launched an art exhibition centered on fabrics and constantly evolving its creative concept.
In 2016, Mary Ma, founder of the Cloth Library, visited St. Gallen, the Swiss textile base. In the more than 100-year-old Textile Museum St. Gallen, the ancient material of lace that passes through time and space is deeply touched. Different from the long-standing stereotypes of gentle, delicate and feminine lace, it is different from the extravagant cultural symbols represented by Italian and French lace; the world's first manual embroidery machine and “etched lace†in St. Gallen "Invented by the classic crafts, the cloth library saw the other side of lace's low-key simplicity and always moving forward. When the centuries-old machine sounded like a familiar sound, the cloth shaft turned into a modern fabric that was treated with technology. This spirit of R&D and innovation continues to this day, giving Lace a new era.
Touched by this blending of time and space and the constant exploration of the boundary, the Cloth Library and the Swiss St. Gallen Textile Museum planned the Lace to Meet You. “Embroidery outside†refers to the origin of St. Gallen in the east of Switzerland; “Huizhong†means that the West is used, inspired and applied, and explores the artistic aesthetics without borders.
Different from the previous exhibitions, this fabric library used multiple platforms for the first time, showing the curiosity of “Lace†charm at multiple latitudes. In addition to the home of the Cloth Library, the exhibition also extends to the Kerry Centre in Hangzhou and the Tmall platform. This is not an academic exhibition, but an exhibition of sensory and visual, contemporary and imaginative, spanning your traditional impression of lace.
Lace: About the past, about the future
The main exhibition area of “Lace to Meet You†in the Cloth Library, from the St. Gallen Lace, blends into the current context and presents us with an interesting journey of lace exploration in a contemporary way.
The whole exhibition is like a lace time and space, and the partitioned space forms a branch theme - "manual era", "industrial era", "multiple inspiration", "picture catalog fashion", "white belief", "mechanical beauty", "war" After the colorful, "Lace Renaissance" these exhibition areas constitute the first half of the exhibition; "Forest Exploration", "Stamp Collection", "Handmade Experience", "Lace Future Pavilion" constitutes the second half of the exhibition, from history, Interpret lace from various angles such as culture and technological innovation, and describe the past, present and future of lace...
Handmade age
Tracing the origin and history of lace, showing the rustic side and fine craftsmanship of lace. In addition to dozens of handmade laces, the viewers appreciate the beauty of their craftsmanship. More importantly, these handmade laces lay the foundation for the mechanism of lace, and are a preview of the all-round prosperity of the mechanical era of St. Gallen.
Industrial Age
Tell about the St. Gallen Lace in the machine age. Due to the embroidery industry formed in the textile and cotton textile industry earlier, St. Gallen's embroidered lace machine appeared even earlier than the woven lace machine, which also created the unique personality of the world-famous St. Gallen lace. In the 1880s, the invention of the "etched lace", a new process combining embroidery and chemical solvents, pushed St. Gallen's lace to the world stage.
Multiple inspiration
With the rise of trade during the Industrial Revolution, St. Gallen Lace continues to be inspired and influenced by cultures around the world. The “Multiple Inspirations†exhibition area shows how the art forms such as paintings and dance performances inspired designers. How the oriental elements and African culture influence the specific presentation of lace fabrics.
Catalogue fashion
Thanks to the invention of the mechanism lace, the luxury goods that lace has been able to wear from special classes such as priests and princes and nobles have become consumer goods that the general public can enjoy. Lace has entered fashion. “Catalogue Fashion†revolves around the footprints of lace in fashion, providing another perspective on fashion, approaching the important element that is often overlooked in fashion – materials.
White belief
Although lace changed into a richer pattern and shape after entering fashion, the early lace products were quite plain, even in a religious image. "White Faith" is such a pure and sacred space to interpret lace from another level of cultural and religious significance.
Mechanical beauty
Further interpretation of Lace's "industrial era." Once, lace was even considered a "cheap". The “Mechanical Beauty†exhibition area hopes to evoke a new understanding of the mechanism lace and machine. The cloth library curatorial team has visited Switzerland for a number of documentaries about lace, which will also be shown here.
After the war
If the "white faith" shows the pure white side of lace, "post-war colorful" shows the colorful side of lace. After the Second World War, the economy recovered and the standard of living improved. Lace product development entered a more relaxed environment, and various color designs were derived for use in other fields such as clothes and accessories.
Lace freshman
From the "manual era" to the "lace newborn", just a reincarnation. In the new section, the Cloth Library brought back the lace products made from 3D printing technology from Jakob Schlaepfer AG (company), the most famous fabric research and development center in St. Gallen. Exquisite 3D lace pattern, scientific and lustrous texture and texture, let us see the new research and development direction of lace.
In addition, the lace crystal works of Charlie Zhang, the founder of the Art Interactive Device team for the Cloth Library, will also be presented in this exhibition area. When “Lace†is placed in a broader material context to interpret it, its presentation is so varied and surprising.
From tradition to the future
Lace to meet you, the embroidered Huizhong lace cross-border art exhibition, which is designed to explore the future. Therefore, the second half of the exhibition was set up as a more open space, which inspired the viewers in the experience and interaction. There are not only hand-made lace workshops, but also the lace “Forest Exploration†module and the “Lace Future Pavilion†with modern technology. It is the most experimental and contemporary art curatorial method used in the entire exhibition. .
Lace "Forest Exploration" is a giant projection device inspired by lace forest light and shadow. The audience can experience the magical lace forest that is also true and magical. “Lace Future Pavilion†will be combined with independent designer brands FENGYI TAN, CHEN PENG, M Essential, Particle Fever, etc., in the form of designer's free creation with lace as the medium, in the form of design works, installations and derivatives. Unfold, break the lace border and explore the possibilities of lace.
Soft to just remodeling lace
At the Kerry Center in Hangzhou, where Lace to Meet You is in the sub-exhibition area, there is more interesting interaction between lace, contemporary temperament, trend culture and art installation. The Cloth Library will join hands with the famous installation art team, combined with the theme of Sino-Swiss Pioneer Design Carnival, to let the public feel the feast of life and aesthetics. Inspired by lace, it is sublimated in the delicate lifestyle of the place here, showing Hangzhou's profound humanistic artistic feelings and different contemporary youth trend culture.
The whole event lasts for 2 weeks and is divided into: Lace Up interactive art installation and Sino-Swiss Pioneer Design Carnival.
From soft to just, it is a interpretation from the delicate aesthetics of lace to the mechanical presentation. We integrate “soft†and “just†through technology, and interact with the audience at the most central venue of the Kerry Centre. The Lace Up interactive art installation at the main atrium of the Kerry Centre consists of 100 sets of lace-wrapped balls over the atrium. Each ball is suspended in a row and varies in height. The viewer can illuminate the bottom of the ball with the flashlight mode of the mobile phone, which can trigger the ball to rise slowly and emit colored light. The cloth library thus gives the lace elements a new form of display. It not only presents a dreamy and beautiful lace image in the mass space, but also features the unique interactive taste of the device, further explaining the “soft†and “just†of the lace material. It also became the main body of this installation.
In addition, in order to promote the cultural communication and design integration between the Chinese and the Swiss side, the Cloth Library also invites Swiss design and Chinese design to gather together to simultaneously present products in various fields including fashion, sports equipment, shoes and accessories. The “China-Swiss Pioneer Design Carnivalâ€, a collection of Swiss and Chinese design pioneers, bringing together creative inspiration and a unique visual experience. The audience can not only experience the different creative styles of Sino-Swiss design, but also have the opportunity to witness the special styles designed by many designers for the Lace to Meet You theme, and feel the refreshing chic art experience.
